For Immediate Release: Hamilton Artists Inc. Announces Staffing Changes

Hamilton, March 2, 2018: Hamilton Artists Inc. congratulates Caitlin Sutherland on new position and welcomes Abedar Kamgari as Interim Programming Coordinator.

Hamilton Artists Inc. congratulates outgoing Programming Director Caitlin Sutherland on her new role at Blackwood Gallery. Caitlin has worked at the Inc. for over five years where she curated exhibitions, developed extensive programming, and coordinated a variety of large scale projects. Her knowledge of the Hamilton community and deep understanding of the national arts scene have made her an invaluable team member. We thank her for her strong commitment to our organization, the artists she has worked with and for her help with the transition.

As Blackwood Gallery’s Project Coordinator she will be working on the execution of The Work of Wind: Air, Land, Sea, a major public art project unfolding in Mississauga’s Southdown Industrial Area in fall 2018, accompanied by extensive programming dispersed across the City of Mississauga’s eleven wards. We wish her all the best in this exciting new position!

We are thrilled to welcome back Abedar Kamgari, as she takes on her new role as Interim Program Coordinator. Abedar is an artist, independent curator, and arts worker based in Hamilton and Toronto. As an artist, she researches immigrant experience in context of the ongoing legacy of colonialism in the West. Often working site-specifically with video and performance, she unpacks diasporic identity using her body, language and food. She received a BFA from McMaster University in 2016 and has exhibited throughout Southern Ontario in artist-run centres and public galleries. Her work is currently on view at the Art Gallery of Hamilton in an exhibition titled The Journey West.

As an administrator, Abedar has held positions with Factory Media Centre, McMaster University, and Oakville Galleries. She has an intimate knowledge of contemporary visual and media arts in Canada, and a strong background in the non-profit sector. Her involvement with the Inc. began in 2015 as a volunteer and intern. Since then, Abedar has worked closely with the organization in varying capacities ranging from exhibiting artist and artist-in-residence to guest curator, committee member and contract staff.
