For Immediate Release: Hamilton Artists Inc. names Jessica Vellenga Executive Director

Hamilton, September 9, 2016: The Board of Directors of the Hamilton Artists Inc. is very pleased to announce that Jessica Vellenga will be taking on the role of Executive Director as of October 1st, 2016.
Vellenga comes to the Inc. with over 16 years of experience in commercial galleries, territorial galleries, and artist-run centers. She is a dedicated, highly motivated professional with a diverse record in fostering community engagement, event management, arts administration, finance, as well as collection and archives management. At the Yukon Arts Centre she was Coordinator of Community Engagement for the Visual Arts at the Public Art Gallery for over seven years. She is a practicing artist and holds a BFA from McMaster University. Her artistic practice is grounded in community collaboration, which combines art, craft, and activism through textile arts. Performing and facilitating community collaborative textile arts, mending, embroidery, knitting, crochet, yarn bombing, and other interactive textile workshops. She has experienced a wide variety of art exhibitions, conferences, workshops, and public lectures at modern and contemporary art spaces throughout Canada and Europe. Her artwork and designs have been exhibited in Canada (Whitehorse, Dawson, Inuvik, Montreal, Calgary, Ottawa, Hamilton, and Toronto) and the United Kingdom (Leeds).
The Executive Director role will allow Vellenga to fulfill her passion through engaging the arts community. She will facilitate the organization’s daily operations, contribute to its strategic growth and serve as the Inc.’s ambassador to the Hamilton Arts Community and beyond. She will also be responsible for maintaining and expanding partnerships with community groups and organizations in the region.
