Hamilton Artists Inc. is pleased to welcome Bhavika Sharma, our new Artist in Residence  / Gallery Assistant! Read on to learn more about Bhavika.

Hi, my name is Bhavika Sharma and I am a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto.

I have a BA in Architecture and Visual Studies from the University of Toronto. Informed by my specialization in urbanism, my practice investigates complex relationships between self and site.

I was previously an editor for SHIFT, an undergraduate zine publication at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture and Design at the University of Toronto. Recently, I worked collaboratively with the Parkdale Neighbourhood Land Trust. Working alongside an Architect and a small team, I designed and built a public installation that fostered community outreach for residents facing eviction due to ongoing gentrification in the Parkdale neighbourhood.

My body of work often begins by uncovering multiple narratives that exist within a site. I conduct this exploration through material, empirical, and oral histories to raise questions of both belonging and erasure. Within my practice, I seek to add to the layered histories of a site. In my piece Dear Diary, I memorialize a defunct queer bar in Toronto’s Queen West neighbourhood; through journaling and illustrating my lived experiences. I look towards constructing new techniques for presenting public histories, especially ones that consider multiple publics.

I began my artist residency at Hamilton Artists Inc. this November and will also be working on winter programming as the Gallery Assistant. In the upcoming months of my artist residency, I am looking to facilitate a virtual gathering space. I intend for this space to allow participants to share personal narratives in relation to the shifting landscape of Hamilton.
