Hamilton Artists Inc. (The Inc.) is mandated to exhibit a range of artistic disciplines and career levels, and to exhibit a cross-section of artists from local, regional and national communities. As an artist-run centre, we are interested in works/projects that have potential impact, push boundaries and engage with critical, conceptual and/or experimental thinking from a diverse range of perspectives and voices. The Inc. supports submissions that showcase artists and curators’ most recent endeavours as well as works that incite conversation and promote a range of intersectional narratives.

We welcome submissions from all qualified individuals and strongly encourage submissions from members of equity-seeking communities, including women, racialized and Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, and persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities/expressions. Please advise us of any accommodations needed to ensure you can access and complete the submissions process.

The Cannon Gallery is the Inc.’s largest gallery space. We encourage open proposals from local, national, and international artists and curators at all levels of their careers. Artist fees for exhibitions in the Cannon Gallery adhere to, and where possible exceed, recommended CARFAC compensation to artists. Applications may be project or practice-based in scope. There are typically 5 exhibition turnovers in this space each year, including an annual curated exhibition by the Programming Director, and a dedicated graduate awards exhibition in partnership with McMaster University.

The Cannon Gallery is currently programmed through to 2020. Applications submitted in 2018 will be juried for the 2021 exhibition schedule. We receive a high volume of applications for this space and as such only those selected for an exhibition will be notified.

Selections Process:

Selections criteria are informed by the Inc.’s mandated objectives. The Selections Jury for the Cannon Gallery is comprised of members of the Inc.’s Programming Committee, Board of Directors, as well as invited guest jurors from the community. The jury meets annually and chooses 2 to 3 exhibitions three years in advance for the exhibition schedule. The selections jury typically meets to adjudicate in the spring. Notification can be expected in early summer. Please be patient. Only successful applicants will be notified.

Application Requirements:

  • Completed Application Form
  • 20 images of proposed or existing work (may submit video instead of images)
  • Artist’s CV (3 pages max.), Artist biography (150 words max.), Artist statement (350 words max.)
    For curatorial applications, please include CVs and Bios for yourself as well as each proposed artist.
  • (Optional) Articles, reviews, interviews, etc. related to your proposed work, scanned and saved as a PDF or Word document (2 articles max.)

We ask that you submit all information via email to with the subject line: Cannon Application_ Your Name. Submissions (excluding images) should be merged into a single pdf and sent via email.  Hard-copy (paper) submissions will not be considered. Do not send files using wetransfer or any other transfer platform that has a time limit for hosting the files. Do not send files using dropbox.
