In Structures, Remains, Gordon Anderson invites us to explore the aesthetic qualities and similarities of the utterly utilitarian structures portrayed. His canvases and photographs depict enormous sites of industry, eerily absent of the workers. This collection of empty sports stadiums, steel mills, and motionless assembly plants illustrates the evolving landscape of large-scale industry in the once illustrious rust belt. Seemingly abandoned, these complexes characterize the indelible mark left by industry in the Ohio, Detroit, and Hamilton landscape. Despite the construction of these structures being predicated on their functionality, Anderson captures these qualities in a way that invites the viewer to consider their aesthetic characteristics, the hope they symbolized at the height of post-war North America, and their continued presence on the landscape through what remains.

Gordon Anderson graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1989 and for the past fifteen years has exhibited in Toronto, Chicago and Frankfurt, Germany. The Christopher Cutts Gallery has represented Anderson since 1998.
