The gallery is currently closed to the public as we are preparing for our fall exhibitions: Jiā yóu!: PROCEED WITH CAUTION & have you eaten? Our opening reception for these exhibitions will be on Friday, September 4th from 7-9pm!
Join us on Saturday October 24 from 2-4pm for a comic making workshop in connection to the James gallery exhibition have you eaten? Jayden Charles will introduce participants to the ever growing autobiographical comic genre with a focus on stories surrounding care and love. Showing comics from Jayden’s collection, they will discuss the various structural differences between graphic novels, manga and comic zines and talk about the variety of stories told in the medium. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own short comic strips and brainstorm ideas around the theme of care, love and nourishment and what that means to them! All welcome, no registration required.
Jayden Charles is a nonbinary Trinidadian-Canadian illustrator and sequential artist based in their hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. They received their BFA in Film Studies from Toronto Metropolitan University. Their work focuses on storytelling and is inspired by their own lived experiences, relationships, and their ever-growing collection of graphic novels and zines. Their goal with their work is to express their feelings and be a representation of queer black artists in a space that typically excludes their voices.
